Bamboo shoots: not just give away gifts

So you thought bamboo shoots can only be gifts? Hold the thought because it’s a highly nutritional food too. Don’t confuse them with the regular ones available in market in glass jars though. These bamboo shoots are sprouts that are available in market in sliced form, fresh and canned. They are rich in protein, carbohydrates, vitamin A, B, C, iron, phosphorous, fat and calcium. Isn’t that impressive! They are to be stored in refrigerator in a glass or jar filled with water. The water is to be changed daily.

Bamboo shoots have high fiber content which helps in curing chronic constipation and remove stomach worms. They also help in reducing cholesterol levels in obese. Their low calorie content makes it useful for weight watchers too. It is also an effective remedy for high blood pressure and internal food poisoning.

In India, states like Assam, Jharkhand, Manipur, Western Orrisa, and Karnataka make efficient use of it. While in Assam it is a part of the traditional cuisine, in Jharkhand and Karnataka it is used in curries and pickles. In western Orrisa it is also relished fried.
