Tomato Uttappam

 

South Indian cuisine is a popular favorite amongst many. It has a variety of dishes suitable for snack time as well as meal time. Tomato Uttappam is one such variety that many eat as a meal as well as a snack

  • Soak white udad dal in a container and ukda rice in another. Keep it for 4 to 6 hours. Then grind both of them seperately. After grinding, now mix both the pastes. This will be soft batter like that of idly batter. Add salt to taste. Mix it properly. Keep the mixture covered for 6 to 8 hours.  After that mix it again properly. Heat a non stick pan (tava) on the gas. Once the pan is hot, spread the batter evenly on it. It should be a little thick. Spread chopped onions, tomatoes, ginger and green chilli pieces or paste and chopped coriander over it. Keep the gas on a medium flame. Apply little oil on the uttapam and cover the pan to cook properly. After a few minutes remove the cover, softly and carefully turn the Uttappam. Cover it again; Again after a few minutes uncover, turn and check it, if it is properly cooked then remove in a serving plate. Repeat the procedure to cook another Uttapam. This tasty dish can be served hot with coconut chutney, tomato chutney and sambar.
