We all need omega 3 fatty acids for the normal functioning of our body – in fact these are essential elements that all of us need in order to keep healthy. Omega 3 fats are vital for different bodily functions such as digestion, blood clotting, brain development and functioning and also fertility among others.  And since these essential fats are not generated by our body, they need to be procured from the food that we eat and other supplements, therefore the necessity of omega 3 rich foods.

 Studies have shown that kids deficient in Omega-3 essential fatty acids are more prone to symptoms such as hyperactivity, learning disorders and behavioral problems. And in today’s world, since we are almost always tied up by our work, paying extra attention to these requirements becomes overtly important.

While there are different kinds of omega 3 fatty acids sources in the food that we eat daily, seafood is the largest source of omega 3 fatty acids which consist of food items like sea fish such as tuna, sardines, cod fish, salmon and halibut and also other different sea foods like crab, lobsters and shrimps. Fish oil is by far the most important and well known source of omega 3 fatty acids for us. It is also a very well known supplementary source of omega 3 fatty acids and can be found in liquid form as well as in the form of capsules.

Apart from animal sources of these essential fats, we also need to know the options that are there for those who consume only vegetarian food. While talking about the vegan sources, the most important would be walnuts, soy foods, pumpkin seeds and rapeseed oil along with green and fresh leafy vegetables such as spinach and lettuce and cabbage which are also high in omega 3 fats. Apart from these food items, fruits such as the melons, black berries and pomegranates are also known to contain omega 3 fats in high proportions.

Those of us who are not keen on either fish or vegetables can opt for eggs, which are easily available, for the daily dose of omega 3 to maintain a healthy and happy lifestyle.
