Yule Log

Yule Log or Bûche de Noël is a classic sweet roll that is enjoyed at Christmas in French speaking countries as well as in the United Kingdom. As suggested by the name,  the yule log cake is made to resemble a log fire.A traditional Yule Log comprises of a simple yellow sponge cake that is packed with chocolate butter cream and sprinkled with icing sugar. You can make your own version of this delicious cake by adding another filling like espresso. To add to the authenticity of the tree log, run a fork through the icing to produce a bark- like appearance.

Recipe:

Ingredients:

For the cake:

  • 2/3 cup flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 4 eggs
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • Bitter chocolate (3 pieces)
  • Water (2 tablespoons)

For the filling:

  • 1/2 pint Whipped cream
  • 2 cups Powdered Sugar
  • 1/4 Cup Cocoa
  • 2 tb Milk
  • 1/2 tp vanilla

Method:

For the cake:

  • Set the oven temperature to 350 degrees.
  • Butter a 15” x 10” jelly roll pan and align with waxed paper. Butter the waxed paper.
  • Combine flour, soda and salt.
  • Beat eggs in a mixing bowl for about 5 minutes. Little by little add in the sugar while continuing to beat the egg.
  • Mix together the chocolate and water and pour into the egg mixture
  • Gently blend in the solid ingredients. Keep on mixing carefully.
  • Pour the mixture into the heated pan.
  • Place the pan into the oven and allow it to bake for about 15 to 17 minutes. The cake needs to turn light and spongy.
  • Cover a tea towel with icing sugar and lay the cake on top of it.
  • Take out the waxed paper and pare the crusts from the cake.
  • Starting at the finer end, roll cup the cake and the tea towel together. Keep it aside for cooling.

 

For the filling:

  • Beat the cream to create soft peaks. Add in the powdered sugar and vanilla. Carry on beating till the cream turns stiff.
  • Unfold the cake and coat the upper- end with the whipped cream. Roll the cake once again.
  • Dust the cake with the powdered sugar and adorn with holly or mistletoe.

It seems like a lot of effort is required to create this striking dessert. In fact, Yule Log is one of the easiest dessert recipes. Besides, once the silky soft cream and delectable chocolate hits  the tongue, you’ll find that it is well worth the trouble of putting together this Christmas cake.
